About

The plancius art collection is an Amsterdam-based private initiative of two friends, aimed at supporting artists and new positions within contemporary visual art. This website gives an overview of the works that are part of the collection.

The plancius art collection started in 2006 as the result of the discussions and cooperation between the two owners, Pierre Karsten and Steven van Teeseling. It has no formal structure or goal, other than to make an exceptional collection of contemporary art for personal use. All the works of art in our collection were created after the year 2000, and were made within a wide variety of media. For the most part there is a direct connection to the contemporary art scene in the Netherlands.

The plancius art collection is named after the Flemish astronomer, cartographer and geographer Petrus Plancius, who fled to Amsterdam at the end of the 16th century. His visionary methods for mapping the world (culminating in ‘Orbis Terrarum’, 1590) seemed suitable for a collection that focuses on exploring the largely uncharted world of contemporary art. Plancius is also the name of the building where the largest part of the collection is housed –and the name of the restaurant where the idea for the collection was born, at the end of 2005.
